For those of you who don’t know what I am talking about, Downton Abbey is a British television series. The series depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era.
The drama portrays the great events in history which effect the lives of every member of the Crawley family, including their servants. British social hierarchy is also threatened by circumstances and world events. Sound a bit dull? To the contrary, just allow yourself to watch a couple of episodes and you will be transported to another time and place.
One thing I so enjoy about this series is the decadent Yorkshire country estate where the Crawley’s reside. The architecture, tapestries, larger than life paintings, gleaming silver and sparkling crystal all merge together to create a wondrous world for living and drama. As a decorator, I thought it might be fun to infuse a little Downton Abbey style into our homes.
Firstly, if we are to live like the Crawley’s, we must have a “staff”. The easiest way to achieve this is hire a maid for the day. Merry Maids can be contacted at 330-752-6150.
Having your home cleaned is wonderful, but what about the overall decor? To get that Downton Abbey style, try introducing the following elements into your design plan; a crystal chandelier, silver tray for mail, fine china for afternoon tea, a dressing table, table runners, damask wallpaper, and of course, fresh flowers. I was able to quickly find all of these items at Etsy.
I also found a website that offers DIY instructions on how to create your very own Downton Abbey Servant’s Bell.
Lastly, if you get flustered while trying to create the perfect Downton Abbey retreat, just remember to KEEP CALM and WAIT FOR CARSON!
